Why Homeschool?

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Personally, public school was never an option we considered, but for those parents who haven’t made a decision, you may want to read these two recently published articles. These two articles convince me more than ever that the quality of public school education in the U.S. is not only declining, but in some cases, deserves an ‘F’!

An article recently published in the St. Petersburg Times talks about how ‘No Child Left Behind’ has ignored the bright and gifted students in favor of the struggling. If reading that article wasn’t disturbing enough, a different article written by Melanie Hubbard, who has a doctorate in English from Columbia University, stunned me! As she describes her experience as a high school teacher, I realize that what she is describing is a system that is totally broken. The unruly, lazy, disrespectful, cheating students in her class would not allow themselves to be taught, challenged disciplined, or enlightened! She doesn’t even bother assigning homework because they wouldn’t do it anyway — besides, if they actually did it, they would just cheat.

I am sure that not all public schools are this ‘broken’, but if more people read these two articles, maybe less people will ask why I homeschool? No, I don’t think my child is missing out on ’socialization’!

I know people who have pulled their kids from the classroom for precisely this reason… their kids weren’t being challenged and were bored.

We never really considered public school either, but I confess that from time to time I do consider it now! lol Only on days when I’m feeling worn out though. Homeschooling takes a lot of discipline on the part of the parent. Huge sacrifice for our family in that we only have one car and are limited to what we can do, but the consequences I trust will be priceless!

Yes, Wendy, homeschooling is a huge sacrifice. Hang in there! It is sad that our public school system is so weak because I have met some amazing teachers. However, they cannot be effective and that is very sad, indeed.

Eclectic Homeschooling

We enjoy highlighting resources we find useful in our homeschooling journey, especially those that fit the eclectic style. Occasionally, we share some of our own lesson creations.
In case you were wondering, the name spottybanana was inspired by a questioning 4-year old who asked: 'Mom, why is this banana spotty?'
